NFRC® Performance Ratings and the ENERGY STAR® Program

Buying new replacement windows involves more than simply deciding whether you want picture windows in your living room or large casement windows. Choosing the right style is important, but so is performance. As you browse through the different customization choices from Renewal by Andersen®, you may have seen the varying ratings for all the glass and framing options. The big blue ENERGY STAR® logo is also hard to miss on all these window products.

NFRC® Performance Ratings and the ENERGY STAR® Program

The performance of replacement windows and doors is determined by the National Fenestration Rating Council® (NFRC). The NFRC gives a “grade” for all window products based on the energy standards that they have set. On the other hand, ENERGY STAR is a program by the U.S. Department of Energy that helps consumers buy energy-efficient products. Here is what you need to know about these two important features.

The NFRC® Ratings

The NFRC measures the performance of replacement windows according to the following standards.

  • The U-factor shows how much heat a material transmits over a period of time. The lower the U-factor, the lower its ability to transmit heat. U-factors are usually used for glass while other insulating materials like frames are rated with R-values, which has a similar function.

  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures of how much of the sun’s heat a replacement window allows to pass through. Higher SHGC means higher solar heat gains. Homes will have different SHGC needs depending on their location.

The ENERGY STAR® Program

Energy efficiency rarely depends on the style of a window. For example, sliding windows may have similar performance with double-hung windows, regardless of how they are operated. The ENERGY STAR program gives a more consumer-friendly look at the energy efficiency ratings of different replacement windows, helping guide customers to products that are 100% right for their home.
