Pro Talk: Understanding How Low-E Glass Works

These days, it would seem that energy efficiency is the mantra in the home improvement industry, with good reason; not only will it result in lower monthly bills, but it will also help contribute to a greener future. This formed the basis on which Low-emissivity (Low-E) glass came to be. With this technology, your windows can be one of the biggest energy savers in your home.

Pro Talk Understanding How Low E Glass Works

What is it exactly? How does it work? Let Renewal by Andersen® of Houston, the expert in window replacement in Houston, TX, explain all you need to know about Low-E glass:

What is Low-Emissivity Glass?

It is a type of energy-efficient glass designed to prevent heat transfer that usually occurs through your windows. The term “emissivity” is a measure of the amount of energy emitted by a material in relation to its environment. A material with a low emissivity can insulate a home better from the heat or cold outside.

How it Works

The Low-E glass in our replacement windows in Houston, TX, slows down the emission of radiant energy. During summer, you want to enjoy natural light and airflow, but not the heat that accompanies them. The problem is that some surfaces in your home, such as tiles and concrete will absorb this heat and radiate it back, making it harder to cool your home. Low-E glass works to absorb this solar heat, rather than let it get all the way to these surfaces.

During winter, Low-E glass prevents heat transfer from inside your home to the outside thanks to its outer panel, which is a poor radiator. This allows your home to retain more heat without having to turn your heater on full blast.
