How to Make Floor-to-Ceiling Windows Work With Your Home

You can’t go wrong with installing floor-to-ceiling windows. It checks all the right boxes: it makes your interior look spacious, maximizes use of natural light, and most of all, presents a spectacular view. Here are our design tips for making it work with your existing home design.

 Floor-to-Ceiling Windows

Keep it Simple

Try using little to no window treatments and let the view be the star. After all, the best feature of floor-to-ceiling windows is its ability to present a panoramic view, especially when an entire wall is lined with it. Choose Roman shades or other kinds of simple retractable window treatments if you need to control privacy.

Allow for ventilation

Ventilation is an important consideration when choosing windows, and can be tricky to incorporate into a room with a floor-to-ceiling window if you have a specific design in mind. For instance, rooms with an entire wall lined with floor-to-ceiling windows can benefit from strategically positioned awning windows. Consider sliding windows on a wall perpendicular to the bigger windows to avoid a visual distraction.

Give It Space

Floor-to-ceiling windows look best when there’s nothing blocking the view, so carefully choose your furniture. A low-set bed or desk, positioned a few feet away from the windows, would be perfect. To maximize the use of floor space, position the furniture adjacent to support posts, and make sure the bottom of the windows are visible from most angles. If you’re concerned about your furniture and fabrics being damaged by direct sunlight, our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass options deflect UV rays while admitting visible light just like clear glass.

Combine It with a Sliding Patio Door

An unobtrusive patio door design with similar frames as the floor-to-ceiling window adds easy access and an alternative ventilation option. For a consistent look, have both windows and patio door installed at the same time by the same contractor. Fortunately, at Renewal by Andersen® of Houston, we offer both and can build and install them with matching frame finish.
